Inflatable Boats Maintenance: Bottom Paint

If you have had prior experience with boats, then you are most likely aware that leaving your boat in the water for more than a few days at a time will inevitably result in algae and other forms of growth attaching itself to the submerge ortions of your boat. The solution to this problem is to protect your boat by coating the bottom with antifouling paint. The paints that boat owners typically use on the bottom of conventional boats are not really suited for use with inflat able boats because those paints do not adhere well to the bottom surfaces of inflatable boats. Also, regular bottom paints are much too thick, and will crack the first time you deflate your inflatable boat for storage.

One of the best paints developed for use on the bottom surfaces of inflatable boats consists of a two-step system that involves applying a primer coat and then a cuprous-oxide bottom paint over the primer coat.

Before you can apply any sort of primer coat or paint to the bottom of a boat, the bottom must first be clean and dry. Remove any existing marine growth from the bottom of the boat with soap, then thoroughly clean it using solvent. The i l solvent for use with PVC boats is MEK while acetone or toluene will do the job for Hypalon boats. A good way to tell when the bottom surfaces of your boat are clean is to soak a clean rag in the appropriate solvent and wipe down the botto m of your boat. If the rag stays clean, then the bottom of your boat is also clean.

While boats that are brand new will not have any existing marine growth, they will, however, have surface plasticizers on the fabric. These plasticizers have to be removed, and you can usually do so with a rag soaked in the right solvent ome inflatable boats have bottoms that are made from relatively rough fabrics, making them hard to clean with a rag or cloth. With such boats, you will need to use a brush with stiff bristles in order to remove the surface plasticizers from the bottom of your boat.

If you have ever treated your boat with any cleaning agent that contains silicone or any form of restorative agent, you will need to use the Interlux #202 solvent wash to remove any and all traces of those substances. This is because any ace of those substances will result in the primer coat or paint coat not adhering properly to the bottom surface of your boat, making the entire paint treatment ineffective.

After cleaning the bottom of your boat, you are ready to begin painting it. If you are using a paint system that involves more than one coat, you can start by applying the primer coat. Once you are sure that the bottom coat has dried, yo an then apply the overcoat. When you finish painting your boat with all of the requisite layers, leave it for some time to dry completely before putting your boat back in the water. The last thing you would want is for all your efforts to b e ruined simply because you were too impatient to let the paint dry fully before getting your boat back in the water.
