Inflatable Boats Maintenance: Checking for Leaks

Clean your inflatable boat then inflate it hard. In a cup, mix 3 ounces of liquid dish soap and an equal volume of water. Brush the resulting solution along the entire length of the seams of your inflatable boat with a regular paintbrush ny air leaking from the seams of your boat will become evident as bubbles forming in the soapy liquid. Be sure to take note of the position of each leak by drawing a circle around the area with a grease pencil.

In order for you to check the inside seams, you will the help of another person to hold the boat up on its side while you repeat this process with the inside seams of your boat. You should also remember to check the inflatable keel if yo boat has one. Next, brush some soap solution over all of the inflation valves on your boat. You should do so while the valve caps are on tight, as it is normal for air to leak slowly from the valves themselves, but it is the valve caps whic h ensure that air does not escape from your boat. Finally, after checking all the valves, use the same solution to check the external surfaces of the inflation tubes. After that, rinse your boat clean using a garden hose and you are ready t o move on to the next step of checking for leaks in your inflatable boat.

The large majority of inflatable boats do have bottoms that are pressurized, so checking for leaks is a slightly more complicated process than with the other parts of your boat. The first step is to make sure that the bottom of your boat clean and dry. Using talcum powder, coat the entire bottom of your boat, then turn it right side up again and support it off the ground with four stools or chairs. Put some water into the boat and slosh it around gently. Any leaks on the b ottom of your boat will become evident as dark spots on the otherwise white bottom. Mark the location of these leaks with your grease pencil, and you are done with the process of checking for and locating any leaks in your inflatable boat, which you can now proceed to patch and repair.
