Inflatable Boats Repairs: Permanent Repairs

If your boat suffered catastrophic damage while you were on a trip and you had to make emergency repairs to it, when you finally arrive back home you will have to make permanent repairs to your boat if you intend to continue using it. If u are unwilling to pay to have your boat repaired at a professional inflatable boat repair shop, you can actually make permanent repairs to your boat on your own.

If you stitched up a tear or gash using rough stitches and makeshift materials, deflate your inflatable boat and undo your temporary repair. Then, using the coarse stone or sandpaper that you will find in all emergency repair kits, rough the fabric around the damaged area. Using any strong polyester thread, stitch the tear together again; making sure that your stitches are fine and tight.

Once the stitches are complete, you the entire damaged area with a repair patch. Most of the time, the patches that you already have in your emergency repair kit will be much too small to patch the damaged area, so you will need to purch some extra large patches. These are relatively easy to obtain, and can be bought at larger marine and watercraft stores, or online.

Of course, professional repair shops make repairs in a much different manner, preferring to patch the inside of the inflatable boat instead of stitching the damaged parts together. While this is an excellent solution for effecting perman repairs, it is also beyond the abilities of most amateur boating enthusiasts and anyone who has had no prior knowledge of boat repairs. Many amateurs who attempt repairs of this sort end up botching the procedure, making a mess of things a nd sometimes even exacerbating the problem.

Inflatable Glues

When repairing an inflatable boat, you will need certain types of glue, as not all glues are effective when used with the material used to make inflatable boats. Most of the time, your instruction manual will come with the manufacturer's commendation as to the type of glue that you should use with your boat. Failing that, however, you will need to determine on your own which glue will work best with your boat. Most glues used for repairing inflatable boats can be classified into one of two categories - single part glues and two-part glues.

One-Part Glues

While single-part glues do not have as great a holding strength as two-part glues, they do have a few advantages that two-part glues lack. Single-part glues are much cheaper than two-part glues, can be stored for a longer period of time, e much easier to use, and are able to last through several seasons or more. Most boaters have found that single-part glues are, in fact, extremely long-lasting and most of them have never encountered a situation where a patch done with sing le-part glue has failed during the lifespan of the boat. Single-part glues can also be used on a boat no matter whether it is made from PVC or Hypalon.

The collective name for single-part glues is contact adhesives, and these glues closely resemble the rubber cement that is often used to glue clippings onto a scrap book. The one difference is that the kind used for repairing boats is mu stronger. You should be able to find single-part glues at any marine store or large hardware store.

Two-Part Glues

Two-part glues are similar to single-part glues in that they are both contact adhesives, but single-part glues work through solvent evaporation, whereas two-part glues work through a catalytic process. Two-part glues actually consist of different substances which must be mixed in order to be used, hence the name.

Two-part glues cost a lot more than single-part glues do, and are also much more challenging to apply when repairing a boat. The catalytic agent used in two-part glues is highly volatile, which gives two-part glues a relatively short she life. Two-part glues form stronger bonds than single-part glues do, however, so if you are attempting major permanent repairs, then using a two-part glue will better ensure that your patch is reliable and will last.
